Learners Confidence

Confidence

Digital Dialogue: Wales helps learners to build their confidence to engage in politics by encouraging them to ask questions and share their opinions, both through preparatory workshops and the Dialogues with politicians.

Learners are encouraged to express opinions openly, disagree respectfully and confidently share their views and questions. This helps them to recognise their own power and voice, as we can see in the feedback data.

There was an 11% increase in learners' “confidence sharing views with politicians”, from 43% before the programme to 54% after.

“One of the longer-term impacts we’ve seen is that [the learners] seem, in lessons, much more willing to express actual opinions.

They realise that having a different opinion to other people isn’t necessarily a problem. Certainly in year 8 [...] they’ve started to tell us, and be much more open about, what they think about things.

I think what they’ve learnt from this is that disagreeing is okay.”
Rob Quinn, teacher, The Maelor School

Additionally, there was a 7.4% point increase in learners’ “confidence discussing issues they care about”, from 49% before the programme to 56% after.

97% of teachers reported that their learners felt more confident discussing issues they care about.

“The pupils who spoke during the Q&A sessions really went above and beyond with voicing their opinions. We’ve also noticed learners understand the basics where they didn't before.”
