Learners' Skills Development

Skills development

Along with political knowledge and understanding, Digital Dialogue: Wales sets out to equip learners with skills that will enable them to better engage with the politicians they meet and the democratic process. The programme supports learners to develop their speaking, listening and research skills.

Developing speaking and listening skills

Learners' speaking and listening skills improved after utilising our resources and engaging with a politician.

69% of learners agreed with the statement “I know how to question a politician” after they had taken part in Digital Dialogue: Wales, compared to 52% of learners before they had taken part, an increase of 17 percentage points.

90% of teachers felt that their learners had improved their speaking and listening skills as a result of the programme.

“The first time I felt very nervous because I'd never met a politician before and she seemed very important...after speaking to [the politician] I learnt that politicians really cared about our opinions...I felt more confident”

Developing research skills

In preparation for their Dialogue, learners are tasked with researching the politician - their background, their responsibilities and their views.

Overall, learners' research skills improved across the programme, with the number of learners agreeing they know how to research politicians increasing by 9 percentage points to 71%.

The most popular aspect of the preparatory workshops was the chance to develop and brainstorm questions, with 34% of learners indicating this as their favourite part of preparing for their dialogue.

“I got to do a lot of research to get to know the politician I was going to speak to which I liked.”
