3.1 Who can vote?

In the UK, your eligibility to vote in an election depends on four things:

• Age
• Nationality
• Where you live
• The type of election

For example, you can vote in UK Parliament (general) elections if you are:

• 18 or over
• A British, Irish, or qualifying* Commonwealth citizen living in the UK
• EU citizens cannot vote in UK Parliament elections.

*A qualifying Commonwealth citizen can vote in UK parliamentary elections if they:

• Are a citizen of a Commonwealth country
• Are resident in the UK
• Have leave to enter or remain in the UK, or do not require leave
