3.1 Who can vote?
In the UK, your eligibility to vote in an election depends on four things:
- Age
- Nationality
- Where you live
- The type of election
For example, you can vote in UK Parliament (general) elections if you are:
- 18 or over
- A British, Irish, or qualifying* Commonwealth citizen living in the UK
- EU citizens cannot vote in UK Parliament elections.

*A qualifying Commonwealth citizen can vote in UK parliamentary elections if they:
- Are a citizen of a Commonwealth country
- Are resident in the UK
- Have leave to enter or remain in the UK, or do not require leave
