4.4 Relationship building questions
Rather than focusing solely on building political knowledge and understanding, learners will sometimes ask questions that are more personal, such as, "If you were singing karaoke, which song would you choose?"
These questions are great in building relationships between learners and their representatives. They also help to break the ice of a dialogue session, keeping both learners and politicians engaged.
For learners who are less confident asking questions about policies or issues, encouraging them to ask relationship questions can be a great way of keeping the engagement in the dialogue sessions.
Here's our Digital Dialogue in Action video, which shows how questions like these can build relationships between young people and their representatives.
Here are some examples of good relationship questions we’ve seen over the years.
“How does your family feel about your political career?”
“Do you think pineapple belongs on pizza?”
“If you were asked to go on ‘I'm Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here’ would you?”
“What position do you play in rugby?”
“We saw from your social media that you like to go mountain climbing with your dog. What is your favourite mountain to climb?”
