8.5 Activity: Making a plan to vote

This activity helps young people think through the practical steps they’ll need to take to vote for the first time. By planning ahead, they’re more likely to feel confident and prepared. This sits within the Engage phase of the Explore – Understand – Prepare – Engage model.

Many people miss voting simply because they forget or leave it too late to sort out the details. A little preparation goes a long way.
Help young people think through:

Where is your polling station?

  • They can check online or wait for their polling card, which tells them where to go.
  • Encourage them to check in advance, especially if they’ve moved recently.

What time will you vote?

  • Polling stations are open 7am – 10pm.
  • Get them to put in in their diary

Do you have photo ID?

  • Remind them they must bring an accepted form of photo ID.
  • If they don’t have ID, they can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate in advance.

Who might you go with?

  • Many young people feel more comfortable going with a friend, family member, or trusted adult.
  • Reassure them that they can bring someone for support (though only they will vote).

Are they taking their pet?

  • You can take your pets to the polling station in the UK, although they won’t be able to vote.
  • Pets are allowed at polling stations – voting with your dog (or other pet) has become a bit of a tradition! Check out the hashtag. If you have a dog, then remember to tag them at #dogsatpollingstations. You can also check out #petsatpollingstations and #horsesatpollingstations!

Encourage young people to set a reminder on their phone or write it in their calendar so they don’t forget on the day.
