7.3 Topics you might feel strongly about
Some issues may feel too important, personal or urgent to approach without emotion – for example:
- The Israel–Gaza conflict
- Climate change
- Trans rights
- Party politics and elections
If you feel strongly about an issue, ask yourself:
- Am I able to present a range of perspectives fairly?
- Can I respond to questions without framing my view as the ‘right’ one?
- Do I need to prepare more – or bring in a neutral resource – before leading a discussion?
It’s okay to step back from a conversation if you don’t feel ready to handle it impartially.
Tip: If a topic feels sensitive or emotionally charged, set clear ground rules beforehand, and focus on listening and asking open questions.
